Blog entry You Asked For it: New Subjects

Grab a comfy seat and a fresh cup of coffee, prepare to get stuck at your computer for a few hours. The many requests for additional subjects from Freericers who can answer questions with their eyes shut, have been heard. Today we launched two new subjects: Literature and Flags of the World, found on the subjects page.

Why did we chose Literature and Flags of the World instead of IQ Games, Human Anatomy or any other subject? We considered all your suggestions on the Feedback forum (and everything else from Arabic to Zoology).

The final decision was simply based on what you wanted. Both of these subjects received the most number of votes. Over 700 Freericers put their hands up for a literature subject, while over 500 voted for a subject dedicated to the country flags of the world.

However, we may consider adding even more, depending on how these subjects are received! So if you like what you see, spread the word: invite bookworm friends to do some good in the world, challenge your local whiz kid to a tournament, share it on Facebook, tweet about it.

Subjects are not the only new addition to Freerice. We also recently launched Freerice Español, with more languages on the way. And because more than 300 Freericers have requested Freerice t-shirts and merchandise we will soon be launching an official Freerice store in the next coming weeks! Make sure to check back often.

I think more science and math subjects should be added. Most of the subjects that are up lean more toward right-brained thinkers. Adding more science and math will leave more options for left-brained thinkers.

I read some of the suggestions. It seems that several people want the topics that are not educational but are trivial. For example, the names of singers that go with songs: trivia. Sports stuff: trivia.

Please stick to subject sthat can make a person more educated. thanks.

Maybe you could add a music category where you guess the singer of a song.

This is really great! Here's the problem: I changed the language to Spanish, for jollies, and found out they don't have the same number of subjects. It seems kind of unfair to me. Could we please get more subjects for the Spanish-speaking people?

hmm... hey although the rice we earn will be donated, but we will still have a record of how many total grains we earned. so i am thinking whether freerice can add a rice shop. As in free rice game items shop. although i do not know what to add as a freerice game item but if freerice was to really add it, not only will it be more fun, it will cause the players wanting to earn more rices. and so with more rice, there will be less hungry people.but there is another problem. if there is gonna be items, then what will they be used for?

im new here I love thiss websight I like learning new laugiges and the map one is fun to my faverite thing about thiss websigt is that it helps feed the hungry that means a lot to me because I was adopted from Russia and I yoused to be in an ofinige we where very hungry and now I live in the USA and im very thankful to live here

wonderful job! i love this site for so many reasons! I encourage the idea of new subjects, but could you maybe first upgrade it and fix any bugs? I've been having a bit of trouble spots or times when it's just rather slow. I think that would be a wise addition before putting anymore new subjects on.

But don't get me wrong - I love the new additions. Flags of the world is my new personal favorite (along with countries of the world), as it makes me feel more educated about the rest of the world.

Kudos on everything and keep up the amazing work!

It would be awesome if there was a subject on History (American and World History!) and the States and Capitols. This is a great site for so many reasons, thanks for adding more to it! Keep up the good work :D!

I disagree with adding things like states because I think this site should be as widely accessible as possible, and the United States capitals aren't really that important. That said, I think Chinese would be a worthwhile addition to the subjects category, as well as Hindi and Russian, because they are the 3rd and 5th most widely spoken languages, respectively.

Other ideas: countries by landmark, history with dates (though this might be difficult since it's so broad - maybe questions about events that happened simultaneously?), mythology, and more difficult math.

I love that you are adding new things to Free Rice. It is a great site and deserves a lot of things. I was wondering, though, could you do a subject based on states in the U.S. like capitols or places on a map?

I like the new subjects, but agree that the 1 levels should be easier/more universally familiar than the higher levels. I'd like to see more levels for the foreign languages, which are too easy for anyone but beginners. Thanks for the feel-good entertainment and education.

Hi diondinosaur, your profile has over 10,000 grains. Can you be bit more clear: when did you earn those 7,000, playing what subject, was it part of a group?
