Blog entry Women - A Secret Weapon To Fighting Hunger

07 March 2011

March 8 is International Women's Day. We at WFP believe women are the secret weapon to fight hunger, and it is a driving force behind the new social media initiative WeFeedback. They bear a disproportionate burden of hunger and malnutrition within the family but they are also key agents of change in fighting and preventing hunger.

Women and girls have unequal access to resources, education and income
Of the millions of people hungry worldwide, many of them are women. The irony is that while they have less food, women are responsible for almost half of the world’s food production. In some developing countries, they make up 60 percent of the agricultural labour force.

This cycle of hunger faced by women in perpetuated when in low-income countries, parents may choose to keep girls at home to work or care for the household. Worldwide, for every 100 boys who do not go to school there are 122 girls who do not gain an education.

This is where WFP school meals come in. An educated girl will get married later in life, have less children, and her earning power later in life will increase by 10, even 20 percent. Providing a hot, nutritious meal at school is a real incentive for parents to send their daughters to school instead. When school meals are provided, attendance levels have increased. This allows the girls to grow strong minds and bodies, and to fulfill their dreams.

What is Wefeedback? It is a unique (and fun!) online social media initiative that allows the us, the priviliged public, to share our passion for food while providing a solution to child hunger and empower women, by providing meals to hungry children. For just 25 cents a day, we can give a child a meal at school – and make a valuable investment in the next generation.

Using the Wefeedback Calculator, you enter your favorite dish and its cost. The calculator will do the rest, working out the number of school children you will feed. And then it's up to you to "feedback" or donate that amount!

Sharing food, changing lives. It's all about us each doing a little to make a big difference in the lives of girls like Nyipher in Kenya, who is 14 and dreams of becoming a judge.

I do agree that a lot of women are suffering from hunger, voilence, abuse and lot more.
Women suffer more than Men. If you look at surveys and news, the list of women being abused is higher than men. But it's not only that, when a women is abused it always includes her child/children.

Seriously, women can express their heartfelt feelings better than men can.
And that's whynot a day passes that we women do not think of the poor, suffering people in Japan who were affected by the tsunami. And by donating just that little amount of rice grains (500 = Good, 1000 = Great, 3000 = Making the Difference, 5000 = Saved the Perishing World from Hunger), we are making all the difference to the suffering people.

hey, all the girls here are acting like girls are so much better than guys. There are good and bad people in both genders, thats something you cant deny. As for girls being able to overpower men, they have had the opportunity for advancement for years, at least in westernized countries, so that is still up for debate.

It is soooooooo unfair that women don't have the same rights as men! And people wonder why there is so much war going on. I mean really! Men just try to keep us at home doing chores and stuff because they know that we would so rule them. If we can mature faster then we should be able to rule better! If you think we're weak, think again! POWER TO THE GIRLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i dont think we should give food to other countries for a little while, there are still hungry people here in the US itself. George washington said we should stay out of forgien things as much as possible. We need to take care of USA's hungry people first, and while we are doing that, let other countries help poor countries. The reason they dont do it is because they know we are going to do it. but we have problems of our own.

3-14-11 For the third time this week, Free Rice is not working. I do hope that someone can get it up and running again, and keep it running as I enjoy doing the vocabulary and giving free rice to hungry people--and now there are so many more again with the earthquake.

Wonderful entry! =)

Is anybody having a problem with Freerice? I can't play for groups, all this red stuff comes up. Anybody else having this problem?

FEMALE POWER! I mean, men are great and all, but the men... They just don't understand. We women have rights! If you treat us like this, then its just like the olden days. Slaves are against the law, us ladies are more than slaves. We're people. We can do stuff, let us get an education, some food, and we can make a difference. Maybe more than you males. Girls who have a good education with food will follow their dreams, and maybe even put a stop to all this war.

The website wasn't working for several days--then this morning I got on and donated 4000 grains of rice, and just came back and it's NOT working again. Please help.

P.S. I hope women in poor countries aka women around the world achieve all their dreams. Men think they can overtake everything but one day we will be the overtakers.

God bless all poor women that have no food and let them achieve all their dreams! And good luck Nyipher! :)

WOMEN ARE AWESOME!!!!! Poor women I want to help them which is why I am doing freerice.com to help women, children, and people. I really want to help them to achieve their dreams!!!!!! Men make women stay home cause they think we will over power them (which is true) and it is totally unfair!
