Blog entry Where in the world did your rice go?

19 January 2011

Since Freerice began doing what it does best in 2007, Freericers have raised enough rice to feed over 4.3 million people.

Here are just a few of the places in the world where your rice and the World Food Programme have helped reduce hunger, and put smiles back on hungry faces:

In Myanmar we helped feed people whose lives were affected by cyclone Nargis, and in the immediate aftermath to feed 750,000 cyclone affected people.

In Bangladesh we helped 27,000 refugees from Myanmar sheltering at Cox’s Bazaar in Bangladesh.

In Nepal we helped feed 108,000 Bhutanese refugees.

In Cambodia we helped feed 13,500 women for almost 2 months as part of WFP’s Mother and Child Health programme (monthly take-home rations of 4 kg of rice for pregnant and nursing women).

In Uganda we fed 66,000 school children.

From January 2011, all rice raised through Freerice will be going to help the people of Haiti. You can find out more about why Haiti needs our help here.

Click here to test your Haiti hunger IQ – and feed a child in Haiti (it cost you nothing but brain cells).

Thank you Freericers for all that you do! Let’s see what we can do this year.

@hannahrose95, while hunger is certainly present in all countries worldwide, when we talk about hunger we're talking about chronic hunger, which is life threatening.

Take a look at this hunger map to get an idea of the scale of hunger experienced worldwide: http://documents.wfp.org/stellent/groups/public/documents/communications...

People don't realize that hunger in the US is huge. It goes under the radar way too much. 1 in 6 children in the United States is struggling with hunger. A portion of this rice needs to go to those kids.

@iamawesomeatthisgame Freerice is owned and managed by the World Food Programme. We've managed to raise enough to feed 4.6 million people, it's definitely not fake.

Free Rice is a great way to donate rice to the hunger and it also helps you build up your education for free. Some educational services let you build education for money. If you have any time, please invite any of your friends to free rice to build more knowledge and help donate more rice to the hungry ones. You might complain to your parents why you eat the foods you don't like. But you should be thankful. Some people still don't have ANY food to eat. If you are one of those who are not complaining, I give all my thanks to you. Thank you.

Much respect to Free Rice, WFP and all of the players out there. The power of the collective makes all the difference in fighting the war on hunger.

The Haiti quake easily fits into the top 20 worst disasters of the decade, and with the recent cholera outbreak while most of Port-Au-Prince still remains in ruins one year after the disaster makes the story even sadder. Knowing that January's rice is gonna help our brothers and sisters across the ocean instills an even stronger desire to keep the questions rollin'.

Also, ever since I started playing the game I couldn't help wondering about the people who genuinely don't like rice. I know at the end of the day food is food, but is it possible to cater for the people who genuinely prefer bread, or some vegetables with their rice?

Keep up the good work!

Mon, 01/24/2011 - 08:02 Rice Is Yummy

It's great to know just how much of an impact all of the players are having on the world.

Not to leech more players off of this, but to anyone reading this, feel free to join my group, TheSpeedGamersCommunity. TheSpeedGamers are a group of gamers that run gaming marathons every 2 or 3 months, and they raise money for various charities. Since March of 08, they have raised over $250,000.
