Blog entry Going East: Freerice China

25 October 2011

In recent months we have launched Freerice in Spanish, French and Italian. We're very pleased to announce that you can now play Freerice China!

It's the Chinese version of Freerice created by our partner - the leading Chinese game company Shanda Games. It offers the same powerful concept (while you play, you help fight hunger), as well as new questions on Chinese history, literature, and other topics.

It also features an extra layer of entertainment, with flash games provided by Shanda’s network. You raise 10 grains of rice each time you play them.

In addition to hundreds of requests from Freericers for a Chinese subject or version, more than 36% of the world's online population lives in China - Freerice China will enable many more people to play Freerice and feed the hungry!

Please note: Freerice China is a separate site from If you are registered with, you will need to create a new account on the Chinese version. Your grain totals will not transfer between the sites.

Grains raised on Freerice China, managed by Shanda, are not included in the totals seen here:

The rice you raise through Freerice China will still go to helping those who need it most.

Good that this has been added now to represent the third of the global population whose mother -tongue is Chinese. Which variant?

That's great! But, I have one question. *clears throat* WHO KNOWS HOW TO SPEAK CHINESE?!
*clears throat again* Thank you.

"讓我們玩" is the traditional version of Chinese, not the more commonly used simplified version. Is this because you are only communicating with Taiwan and not mainland China?
